Chilling with the Whimbrels 4/21/26

As I mentioned in my earlier pelicans video, I was getting a bit stir crazy, and the familiar cry of the Hudsonian Whimbrels was calling to me. So I grabbed my camera and went down to the beach to spend some time with our beautiful shorebirds. The Whimbrel are among my favorite shorebirds to just sit and watch. And they disappoint me this day. They are just so much fun. This video is a bit longer than usual, and it only represents about 5% of the footage I shot. It was brutal trying to narrow down what I wanted to show, in part because I wanted to show it all!

If you stick through to the end, close to the end there's a little bit of "behind the scenes". You'll see a little bit of chaos with the camera as I'm trying to follow one of them in flight, and then you hear me exclaim "Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!" which is when a wave dumped a whole lot of water into my boots. I wear fairly tall, fully-waterproof boots so that I don't have to worry too much about working near the breaking waves. But this one was bigger than the rest, and I had my back turned (bad Dave!) as the bird had flown to the inland side of me. Oh well.
