Humpback Whales 8/15/25
I wasn’t really planning on going out to photograph the whales today. But when my friend Chris messaged me that there were active whales at Rockaway, I grabbed my camera and zipped on down to Rockaway. In some ways it was an embarrassment of riches. There were at least 5 whales in the area and all were relatively active. But that caused problems, especially because the whales often seem to conspire against me. I’d be tracking one whale, sure he’d lunge soon, then I’d catch a lunge from a different whale out of the corner of my eye, switch to that whale, and then the first whale would perform a beautiful lunge. Lather, rinse, repeat on that for quite a while. I did manage to catch a few decent shots, despite the whales’ best efforts.
