Humpback Whales 7/10/25
These were taken at the Pacifica Pier between 8am and 1pm. I’ve been watching, with both frustration and pleasure, the Humpback Whales which have been hanging out between the pier and Mori Pt for the past week. I’ve been trying to rehab a nerve issue in my neck and have been unable to go out and photograph them. Today I finally gave up, grabbed the camera and headed out. I was only planning on going to the beach out front for 15-20min. To try and ensure that would be the case, I didn’t dress as I normally would, nor did I bring my camera vest or any other camera gear. Well, when a mother/calf pair headed toward the pier I couldn’t resist and hurried over to the pier. And then more whales came in, and they just wouldn’t leave - at least not long enough for me to decide to go home. That “15-20 minutes” ended up being over 5 hours. But it was worth it - I had been sorely missing the whales, and they helped soothe my soul and (mostly) kept me distracted from the cold eating away at my feet, hands and working its way through my body.
I was able to do a fast ID on two of the whales. One was CRC-21266 ( https://happywhale.com/individual/106549 ) and the other was HW-MN0524328 ( https://happywhale.com/individual/135349 ).
