Green Sea Turtle in Australia 6/25/25

Normally I wouldn’t dedicate a post to photos like these, and would probably just lump them in with “animals I saw in Australia” or something similar. But I have a strong affinity for sea turtles and was so excited to see this guy pop up, that I felt he should get center stage. We were on the liveaboard dive boat OceanQuest for a night and two days to do some diving on the Great Barrier Reef. After one of the dives I was hanging out on the sun deck soaking up the sun and sea breeze when I saw a sea turtle pop its head up. I was not expecting that, and of course my camera was in my cabin. I snapped a shot with my iPhone and ran to the cabin to get my big camera, but the turtle was long gone by then. From then on, I made sure to always have my camera with me when I was resting between dives. The next day I was lucky enough to see another one pop its head up. He was only up very briefly, but I managed to get a few shots before he disappeared again. I’ve been fortunate enough to see them and swim with them underwater, but it’s been many years since I last was in the water with one. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see one underwater on this trip, but I was still elated just to catch a glimpse, however fleeting it may have been.
