After 20 truckloads of parts were delivered, the large crane being used for the stabilization project was erected and the arm lifted off the ground for the first time. That is one big crane! 170’ high and 400 tons. For this video, I actually sped up a large part of it, which is rare for me - normally I’m slowing it down. But that crane moves pretty slowly when watching in real time. :-) So if it looks a little more jittery than my usual videos, that’s why.
Responsible drone note: The city of Pacifica issued a press release regarding drone usage around the crane. The text is included below. I was flying a fair distance (roughly 800 feet) away from the construction site, and always out over the ocean. It may look like I was closer, but I was using the long telephoto lens on my drone and also did some crop-and-zoom in post. I believe I was flying in a very safe manner, and following the city’s rules. Please be sure to act responsibly and follow the rules.
From the City of Pacifica’s Press Release regarding using drones during the stabilization: “Drone operations will not be permitted along the crane’s travel route and within the designated construction zone during the pier stabilization activities. This restriction is necessary to maintain a safe working environment for construction crews, residents, and visitors, and to prevent interference with crane operations and other critical work.”
