Bottlenose Dolphins 9/12/25
Bottlenose Dolphins Ft Funston 9/12/25. This video was shot in 4k. If possible, I recommend watching it full screen on a monitor or TV. And make sure the video quality is set to 4K (if your internet connection supports it). Click the gear icon and check the quality - if it's not 4K, click on quality and select 4k.
I was chasing these Bottlenose Dolphins much of the day. I was zipping from the Pacifica Pier to the RV park, to Mussel Rock and Fort Funston, and did that multiple times. All of the footage for this video was shot from the beach at Fort Funston. The entire "dolphin train" numbered about 20, but they were separated into roughly 4 groups. One of the most interesting things about this group is that at the back of the group is a Harbor Porpoise traveling with 2 dolphins. Dolphins and porpoises don't normally get along, and dolphins are known to kill porpoises. However, to all outward appearances, these 3 seem to be getting along and traveling together. You can see the porpoise and 2 dolphins near the end of this video. You can identify the Harbor Porpoise because it is much smaller than the dolphins and has a triangular dorsal fin.
The video is all in time-order and basically all from a single video, but I trimmed out the periods of time when there were no dolphins visible in the video. I probably could/should have trimmed more and just presented some of the more interesting parts, but I thought this helped show what the experience is watching and trying to photograph/video them. If you're impatient, you can skip ahead a little - it gets more interesting as the dolphins get closer to me.
